PM Modi at the Kashi Vishwanath Dham

Before inaugurating the mega redevelopment project, he took a dip in the Ganga and offered prayers, and carried the holy water across the roughly 500m corridor, and dedicated the complex to the nation. The complex comprises 24 buildings built over 550,000 square feet and includes an emporium, a museum, a sacred kitchen, a Vedic library, a center to store ancient scriptures, a city gallery, and a food court – all built around the temple that serves as one of the nerve centres of the Hindu faith, attracting seven million pilgrims annually. Modi said the complex could host between 50,000 and 75,000 devotees at any given time. Addressing a gathering of 3,000 guests, the PM urged Indians to make three resolutions for the sake of the country: Swachhta (cleanliness), Srijan (creation), and continuous efforts for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). In a 45-minute speech, Modi said India was focused on reviving its lost heritage and was stepping out of the “inferiority” complex brought on by centuries of slavery. "This entire new complex of Vishwanath Dham is not just a grand building, this is also a symbol of the sanatan (ancient) culture of India. This is a symbol of our spiritual soul, a symbol of India's antiquity, traditions, India’s energy and dynamism,” he added. PM Modi's numerous visits to UP and Varanasi in particular have led to many claiming that the lines between official government functions and BJP's perpetual election campaigns are getting blurred with each passing day. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had a caustic taunt for the PM when he said, "It is good that Modi is in Varanasi. People stay in Varanasi when the end is near. Why only a month? He should stay for two months, three months. That is a good place to stay."
