The Legislative Assembly of Gujarat, also known as the Gujarat Vidhan Sabha, is a unicameral law making body and consists of 182 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The seat of the Legislative Assembly is at Gandhinagar, the capital of the state.
The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Gujarat were held in Dec 2017.

- The Gujarat Legislative Assembly elections in 2017 saw 1,828 candidates contesting for 182 seats, in comparison to 1,666 candidates in the 2012 Assembly elections.
- 66 political parties contested the 2017 Assembly elections, in comparison to 41 parties in the 2012 Assembly elections.
- 56 of the 66 parties secured less than or equal to 0.1% votes individually and 0.7% votes collectively in the 2017 Assembly elections.
- Gujarat had 43.5 million registered voters (electors) in the 2017 Assembly elections, in comparison to 38.1 million registered voters in 2012.
- Only 68.4% of the voters exercised their franchise in the 2017 Assembly elections, a 3% drop over the 2012 Assembly elections. The men's voter turnout of 70.5% was higher than women's turnout of 66.1%.
- The total voter turnout in Gujarat Assembly elections has increased significantly since the 2007 Assembly elections, moving up from 59.8% in 2007 to 68.4% in 2017. However, it remains lower than most other states in India and shows lack of concern and awareness amongst Gujarat residents about the importance of exercising their franchise in improving Gujarat's socio-economic conditions.
