The term of the Legislative Assembly is five years. However, it may be dissolved earlier than that by the Governor on the request of the Chief Minister. The last legislative Assembly elections in Tripura were held in Feb 2018.

- The Tripura Legislative Assembly elections in 2018 saw 297 candidates contesting for 60 seats, in comparison to 249 candidates in the 2013 Assembly elections.
- 17 political parties contested the 2018 Assembly elections, in comparison to 15 parties in the 2013 Assembly elections.
- 5 of the 17 parties secured less than or equal to 0.1% votes individually and only 0.2% of total votes cast in the 2018 Assembly elections collectively.
- Tripura had 2.6 million registered voters (electors) in the 2018 Assembly elections, in comparison to 2.3 million registered voters in 2013.
- 89.4% of the voters exercised their franchise in the 2018 Assembly elections, a 2.4% drop over the 2013 Assembly elections. The women's turnout at 91.4% was higher than that of men's at 87.4%.
- The voter turnout in Tripura Assembly elections is amongst the highest across all states in India. This shows the keen interest taken by Tripura residents to participate in the democratic process by casting their vote.
