Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index
The Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report is published by the World Economic Forum (WEF) with support from industry leading data partners such as the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Published biennially, the TTCI benchmarks the T&T competitiveness of 140 economies and measures “the set of factors and policies that enable the sustainable development of the Travel & Tourism (T&T) sector, which in turn, contributes to the development and competitiveness of a country.
The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report is a flagship product of the World Economic Forum’s Platform for Shaping the Future of Mobility, which brings together world leaders to ensure travel and transportation systems meet 21st century demands. This report serves as a strategic benchmarking tool for policy-makers, companies and complementary sectors to advance the future development of the T&T sector by providing unique insight into the strengths and development areas of each country/economy to enhance industry competitiveness.
The overall index is made up of the following four main sub-indexes, 14 pillars and 90 individual indicators, distributed among the different pillars:
- Enabling Environment
- T&T Policy and Enabling Conditions
- Infrastructure
- Natural and cultural resources

SUBJECT Variables
OVERALL PERFORMANCE
- India, which accounts for the majority of South Asia’s T&T GDP moved up six places to rank 34th on the 2019 Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index covering 140 countries.
- India’s score of 4.4 on a scale of 7 was at par with the Asia Pacific (ASPAC) average of 4.4. Its strengths in the areas of cultural resources and price competitiveness helped India, being the only lower middle-income country, feature in the Top 35 on the 2019 Index.
- Though India’s overall score improved marginally from 4.2 in 2017, its inability to get a hold on specific legacy areas such as Tourist Service Infrastructure weighed on its overall score and ranking.

The Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index is made up of four main sub-indexes, 14 pillars and 90 individual indicators, distributed among the different pillars. The four sub-indexes are - Enabling Environment, T&T Policy and Enabling Conditions, Infrastructure, and Natural and cultural resources.
Sub-Index Summary
- India scored 5 on a scale of 7 on the 'Natural & Cultural Resources' sub-index in 2019. The score helped India rank 9th amongst 140 countries on the Index in 2019.
- India's score on the 'Infrastructure' sub-index was amongst the lowest of the 4 sub-indexes. India score 3.8 on a scale of 7 and was ranked 55th amongst 140 countries on the Index in 2019.
Enabling Environment
- On the 'Enabling Environment' sub-index, India's score for its business environment was the highest amongst the 5 pillars. India scored 4.9 on a scale of 7 for its business environment on the T&T Competitiveness Index 2019. India's score was almost at par with the Asia Pacific score of 4.8.
- India was ranked 105th amongst 140 countries on the Index in 2019 with a score of 3.6 on a scale of 7. The score was lower than the Asia Pacific average score of 4.8.
