In simplest terms, a crime is defined as an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. In India, crime are grouped under 2 major law codes;
- IPC: The Indian Penal Code (IPC) is the official criminal code of India. It is a comprehensive code intended to cover all substantive aspects of criminal law.
- SLL: Special and Local Laws (SLL) are acts that are framed by the state government for specific issues. eg. the law prohibiting the sale of lottery tickets or the Antiques and Art Treasures Act.

- India's overall crime incidences rose by 28% in 2020 where a total of 6,601,285 crimes were reported. Of these 64% were IPC crimes and 36% were SLL crimes.
- Total crime incidences in India have risen by 149% since 2013.
- Tamil Nadu recorded the highest incidences of cognizable crimes in 2020 with 1,377,681 total incidences - a 203% increase over 2019. Of these, 65% were IPC crimes.
- Gujarat recorded the second-highest crime incidences in 2020 with a 699,619 total incidences - a 62% increase over 2019. Of these, 55% were IPC crimes.
- In 2020, 58% of all cognizable crime incidences were reported in the 5 states of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Maharashtra.
