Suicides
The Government of India classifies a death as suicide if it meets the following three criteria. If one of these criterion is not met, the death may be classified as death because of illness, murder or in another statistical measure.
- it is an unnatural death,
- the intent to die originated within the person,
- there is a reason for the person to end his or her life. The reason may have been specified in a suicide note or unspecified.
Estimates for number of suicides in India vary depending on the reporting agency. The figures shared herein are based on the data obtained from National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the official government agency responsible for collating and presenting data on suicides across the country.

TOTAL SUICIDES
- The count of suicides increased by 10% in 2020 to 153K.
- The suicide rate has been increasing steadily over the last 3 consecutive years - from 9.9 in 2017 to 11.3 suicides per lakh population in 2020.
- 20 of the 36 states/UTs exceeded the national average suicide rate of 11.3 in 2020.
- Andaman and Nicobar Islands recorded the highest suicide rate in 2020 at 45 followed by Sikkim (42.5), Chhattisgarh (26.4), and Puducherry (26.3)
- Bihar recorded the lowest suicide rate in 2020 at 0.7, followed by Manipur at 1.4.
