The 15th Legislative Assembly of Madhya Pradesh formed post the elections held in Nov 2018 consists of 230 MLAs. Since INC (Indian National Congress) could not secure an absolute majority of 116 seats independently, it claimed support of SP's 1 MLA, BSP's 2 MLAs and 4 Independent MLAs to form the government. Kamal Nath took oath on 17 Dec'18 as new Chief Minister Of Madhya Pradesh and with this, INC came back to the power in State after 15 years. However, after the resignation of 22 sitting MLAs from the INC, Kamal Nath resigned on 20 Mar'20 and subsequently Shivraj Singh Chouhan of the BJP returned as the CM again on 23 Mar'20. Subsequently there were a few changes in the composition of the assembly based on the bye-elections held in specific constituencies.

  • BJP now has 127 MLAs in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly giving it a control over 55% of the total seats in the Assembly
  • INC has 96 MLAs and sits in the Opposition
  • All other parties and independent MLAs together account for 7 seats

Key leaders in the Assembly:

  • Speaker: Girish Gautam (BJP)
  • Chief Minister: Shivraj Singh Chouhan (BJP)
